Accueil d'Antonio Bonatesta à SIRICE // Welcome to Antonio Bonatesta in SIRICE

//

Antonio Bonatesta (1982), Assistant Professor in Contemporary History at the ‘Aldo Moro’ University of Bari (Italy), is hosted at the UMR SIRICE of the Sorbonne University, from 15 January to 15 March 2022.

He is carrying out research activities in the field of Environmental History, concerning exploitation and management policies of groundwater. This is a topic of great importance for understanding the economic and urban development forms in 19th-20th century Europe which, up to now, has been little investigated by Italian historiography.

Bonatesta is interested in the intense development, from the first half of the 19th century, of French geological and hydrological knowledge, as well as in the experimentation of new drilling techniques in Paris, which had a consistent circulation in Europe. Works by engineers and scientists such as Abdon Garnier (1785-1865) and Louis Héricart de Thury (1776-1854), or industrialists like Joseph Degousée (1795-1862) and Eugène Flachat (1802-1873), have had in the following decades a long influence in Italy, in the context of a second-comer economy that would have started an intense process of agricultural modernization and its first forms of industrial development, facing soon the building of the ‘Sanitary City’.

Antonio Bonatesta (1982), PhD, currently is Assistant Professor in Contemporary History at the ‘Aldo Moro’ University of Bari (Italy). He has carried out several research activities at the University of Padua (2020-21), the European University Institute (2016-19) and the University of Salento (2014-17). His interests are mainly focused on the political and economic history of the Italian ‘Mezzogiorno’, with reference to the role the European institutions – such as the European Commission and the European Investment Bank – have assumed in supporting its economic and industrial take-off. He also deals with Environmental history, in relation to the governance of water resources in Italy, and Cultural history.
